Should I Listen to the Voice in My Head?

Doesn’t it seem as if there is always someone talking to you from inside your head? It feels as if there is someone, other than yourself, or something within you that interacts with life and living. People call this phenomenon intuition, a gut feeling, sixth sense or an inspiration, to name a few. Is this a type of mind feedback? Or, does this sensation originate from beyond mind and body? This voice is a vibrational energy presence that manifests through the brain. Therefore, are these occurrences of the mind? Indeed, the majority of people think and believe that these are strictly mind reactions.

Most certainly the mind interferes, thus can influence the voice within you. Nevertheless, know that how you interact and respond to this mind feedback decides how you live. Likewise, do you sense something that is beyond mind interaction or manipulation? Yes, the mind diverts your focus to a thought or feeling. However, the presence of your being acknowledges something more in the background of your life experiences. Your practice is to awaken to the depth of your person within a conscious presence of being. This is the evolution of consciousness that is individual and equally universal, both are one.

What is the Voice in my Head?

Therefore, is the voice in your head a combination of mind (thoughts/feelings) and universal conscious energy frequencies (awareness/beingness/presence)? This theory is likely accurate. Thus, let’s inquiry further into this speculation. Is it possible that a universal consciousness exists in an object that is not self-conscious? This analysis would be similar to the question. “If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?”

This offers possibilities to consider in areas of aware observation (conscious presence), quantum mechanics and metaphysics. Wikipedia offers this question. “Can something exist without being perceived?” It seems difficult to explain the voice in your head. Nevertheless, we perceive it. There is your mind and there is the presence of being. Therefore, ask yourself. How do I wish to be? And, how will I choose to experience being? Wikipedia shares teachings that are relevant for our discussion.

Tibetan:
“22 Appearances are one’s own mind. From the beginning, mind’s nature is free from the extremes of elaboration. Knowing this, not to engage the mind in subject-object duality is the bodhisattva’s practice.”
– The Thirty-Seven Bodhisattva Practices by Ngulchu Thogme Zangpo

The Mind and the Voice Within

Zen:
Hui-neng’s Flag

There is a well-known story of Hui-neng, a well-respected Buddhist monk who later became known as the founder of the Zen school, who one day happened to be passing by two monks. “Two monks were arguing about the temple flag waving in the wind. One said, ‘The flag moves.’ The other said, ‘The wind moves.’ They argued back and forth but could not agree. The Sixth Ancestor said, ‘Gentlemen! It is not the wind that moves; it is not the flag that moves; it is your mind that moves.’ The two monks were struck with awe.”
– The Mumonkan Case 29, translation by Robert Aitken

The mind manifests duality. Therefore, your practice is to accept the mind and consciously observe your interaction with the voice within. This nurtures aware presence and conscious evolution.
